During a 15-year long scale of existence, excessive drops accumulated over the past 15 years turning into toxic and  harm the economy. Items stack infinitely and destroy all the price to worthless.

To keep RS healthy in a long run, we must have the same number of items to sink, which is equal to the number of items being added into this game. Therefore, if we treat our game as a long run (15 years), there must be a solution to sink VAST amount of items.

One solution is being able to combine the same items and give a +1 tier as enhancement, up to +10 tier.
(The number suggested below is for reference only, exact number should be decide by Jagex after viewing statistics figure and come up with a reasonable amount.)

For example, a whip is lv 70 weapon.

add 1 whip to a whip, you get a lv 71 whip (whip+1).
add 2 whips to a whip+1, you get a lv72 whip (whip+2).
add 4 whips --> lv 73 whip (whip+3)
add 8 whips --> lv 74 whip (whip+4)
add 16 whips --> whip+5
add 32 whips --> whip+6 (For item+6 and onward, it is not tradable and particles effect will be added.)   
add 64 whips --> whip+7
add 128 whips --> whip+8
add 256 whips --> whip+9
At last, add 512 whips, you get a whip +10 which has tier 80 stats.

So in a complete upgrade, 1023 whips is consumed which should be a decent item sink even in a long run. Price for whip could get more stable. Even tier 80 whips' stats seems high compared to tier 70 whip, but 1023 whip would take a while to collected and meanwhile, other players could have the time to get a real tier 80 weapons. So it can keep the balance.

This could apply for all item or just items that crashed so much like slayer drops, GWD items. Tier 90 weapons could also apply but its should be all up to you guys to decide.

This mechanics better rather than Jagex's degrade to dust method. It ensure vast amount of items to be consumed according to the market price. Also, after you consumed an item, you know it stack up for something, not just vanished to nothing.

Please post your suggest/question/improvement idea. I will try to improve this thought better or to know why it would not work. Thank you.

Questions and Answers:

1. This would only work for the highest tier weapons. Why "compress" a thousand whips when you could just buy a drygore for cheaper? (Zippy)

A: The main purpose of item compression is not about spending 1k whips for T80 weapon. It is to create significant item sink to keep price stable. If a whip is 70k, its easy to spend 70m for a non-degrade particle effect whip. So the market will have large demand of whips and raise its price to equilibrium; if price goes back to 700k each, market will decide its not worth spending 700m for a t80 whip and stop doing so. So the price always stay at true equilibrium but not at high alch level. This also applies to high-tier like drygore as long as they start to flood.

This will help keep all item its desirable price and everyone is happy with the drop again.

2. should just add enhancers where it will consume the item...like 07 with kraken tentacles and as of recent rs3 added wyrm hearts to upgrade sols to t85 mage weps where sols can now leave the game. (Yugioh)

A: Adding enhancers is a good idea. However the speed of consuming is far too slow to achieve. One example was the royal crossbow part. Even the parts can be consumed, its too slow to match up the speed of adding. They eventually down to 100k each (high alch price). We need a significant sink that can self adjust itself.
